Bio

Lucilla Loddi, artistically known as “Bugz”, is one of the most innovative and versatile voices in net art and contemporary interactive art. Her artistic research explores the boundaries between identity, technology, and introspection, using her own body and image as the focal point of her works. Born in Rome in 1969, Bugz employs photomanipulation and digital art techniques to create a dialogue between the self and the other, between the observer and the observed, thus deconstructing traditional dichotomies of subject and object.

Bugz's career began in the dynamic environment of Flyer Communication LAB and the Roman contemporary art association "Vernice," a mobile gallery/non-gallery that served as a melting pot of artistic experimentation. In 2000, together with Gianluca Del Gobbo, Bugz joined the emerging Web-art movement “Shockart.net”, the first contemporary art initiative entirely dedicated to works created using the innovative Shockwave software. In this context, Bugz participated with interactive videos and installations showcased at numerous international events.

One of the most significant moments in her career was the encounter with the “FLxER” software in 2001 during the collaboration between Shockart.net and Alberto Bordonaro’s “Blue Cheese Factory”. This tool became central to her VJ performances, playing a key role in her participation in the Live Performers Meeting, events curated by Flyer Communication LAB and Gianluca Del Gobbo.

Since 2000, Bugz has expanded her artistic research beyond the roman movement, collaborating with curators such as Augusto Pieroni, who curated her first solo exhibition, "E-motion," in 2004.

Transformative Works

"Enantiotropia" [Enantiotropy] is a photo-sonic sequence where identity fragments and merges with painted signs, recomposing itself through the viewer’s perception. The audio track recalls the fundamental mantra, merging spirit and matter in an immersive experience.

"Crisalide" [Chrysalis] is a metaphor for personal and artistic growth and transformation. Inspired by insect metamorphosis, this series, derived from a performance, explores vulnerability as a crucial moment in achieving maturity. The images convey a sense of suspension and potentiality.

"Enantiodromia" [“Opposite running course”, Jung], an interactive Flash-based work, embodies Bugz’s approach to self-fragmentation and reconstruction. Through an open-closed circuit of eternal returns, accompanied by the Gayatri Mantra, the piece invites the viewer to reflect on their own identity and inner transformations.
